Gallery 3

Friday 17 March - Sunday 9 April 2023

Opening Thursday 16 March 2023, 6pm - 8pm

A Stranger I Know Well investigates the liminal space between narcissism and self-loathing by allowing the artistโ€™s own insecurities to manifest themselves in a body of work that puts the gaze on display.

The exhibitionโ€™s witty and purposeful use of reflection provides the viewer space to consider the value of (self) image in our visually saturated culture.

Noah Spivak

Noah Spivak studied at the Cooper Union School of Art, New York and received a Bachelor of Fine Art in photography from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver (2015). After graduation he migrated to Melbourne and has been actively producing work for exhibition since.

The artistโ€™s compulsive urge to collect โ€“ objects, relationships, meaning โ€“ is used to explore the small phenomena of the reality we inhabit. Spivakโ€™s current processes collaborate with the alchemical world, creating temporal artworks that express a deep adoration for the materials used. His fascination with the invisible and obsession for process-led experimentation culminate in a body of work that explores how we experience visual art and the subconscious decisions we make leading up to this moment.

Spivak was awarded the 2021 Emerging Artist Award presented by FortyFive Downstairs (AUS) and has been shortlisted for the Museum of Art & Culture Art Prize (AUS). He is currently featured as VOGUE Livingโ€™s โ€˜Fresh Takeโ€™ - being named as โ€œone of the most promising young Australian artistsโ€ of 2022. Spivak has exhibited both nationally and internationally.
