APPLY FOR A STUDIO

M16 Artspace has 28 non-residential studios available for rent by visual artists and creative practitioners working in related fields. Studios range in size from 6 to 60 square metres and are designed to accommodate a variety of art practices. All studios have 24/7 access. 

M16 Artspace operates out of the former Griffith Library, which was converted into gallery, studio, and workshop spaces in the early 2000s. As one of Canberra’s few long-term studio providers, we recognise the importance of stable and consistent studio access for creative practitioners at all levels. 

Each studio suits different practices, so please consider your needs and requirements when applying. 

M16 Artspace cannot indicate when studios will become available, as this depends in part on the departure of current studio artists. When a studio becomes available, a general callout is issued and all new applications are considered alongside those on file. 

All visual artists and creative practitioners working in related fields are encouraged to apply.

STUDIO UPDATE:

We are currently accepting applications to fill the studios listed below. Applications remain open year-round; however, to be considered for this round, applications must be submitted by 15 June. Any submissions received after this date will be considered for future rounds as per usual. 

Our Available Studios: 

  • A compact, light-filled studio that’s well-suited to artists looking for a dedicated space to work on a small scale. It includes a sink and mirror, and offers a quiet, practical environment to focus and create.

    Studio size: 6 m²
    Rent*: $89.75 per month
    Amenities: Natural light, Sink
    Suitable for practices such as: Jewellers, writers, digital media artists — or any practice that fits a compact, self-contained workspace.

  • Identical in size and layout to Lightbox 1, this light-filled studio provides a low maintenance and affordable workspace for artists. It’s a practical space to support focused creative work, with a sink and mirror for convenience. 

    Studio size: 6 m²  
    Rent*: $89.75 per month 
    Amenities: Natural light, Sink 
    Suitable for practices such as: Jewellers, writers, digital media artists — or any practice that fits a compact, self-contained workspace. 

  • Item This well-appointed studio offers 23 square metres of private workspace in a self-contained and quiet environment. Natural light enters indirectly through high and frosted windows, making the space suitable for creative practices that require consistent, controlled lighting conditions. 

    Studio size: 23 m² 
    Rent*: $344.04 per month  
    Amenities: Indirect natural light via high and frosted windows 
    Suitable for practices such as: Painters, photographers, printmakers — though the space may suit a range of creative practices depending on individual needs. description

  • One of M16 Artspace’s largest studios, this space was originally developed with large-scale painting in mind. It features abundant natural light and includes built-in storage and an MDF-lined masonry wall for convenient hanging and display. The studio has been well loved by its previous long-term tenant and is ready for someone new to make the most of this generous, light-filled space. 

    Studio size: 40.5 m² 
    Rent*: $762.98 per month 
    Amenities: Natural light, built-in storage, MDF mounting walls and shelving. 
    Suitable for practices such as: Painting, installation, sculpture, or other large-scale practices. The space is well suited for any artistic practice. 

General Info

All studios include 24-hour access, giving you the flexibility to work on your creative practice whenever it suits you. 

Free secure parking is available within our spacious courtyard, providing a convenient option for artists who drive. 

*Please note: studio rent increases annually by 3.5% or in line with CPI. 

 

HOW TO APPLY

To be considered for a Studio at M16 Artspace you will need to submit an application through the online form found at the bottom of this page. 

We encourage all applicants to review our Studio Application Info Pack before beginning the application. This pack provides essential guidance on the application process, and answers to frequently asked questions to assist in preparing your submission. 

If you aren’t able to complete the application once you have initiated it, you will be able to come back to your submission if you are using the same device and IP address

Successful applications are allocated through reviewing suitability, commitment to practice, community involvement and other considerations.
