Artists Society of Canberra / by Kirrily Jordan

The Artists Society of Canberra Inc (ASOC) is a not-for-profit association operated by artists for artists and run entirely by volunteers. ASOC was founded in 1927 by the architects, draughts people and surveyors of the ACT. As a community organisation with around 360 members, ASOC’s role is to encourage practice in and appreciation of the visual arts in all mediums.

ASOC arranges workshops with local and interstate tutors, holds small exhibitions and offers a variety of learning experiences for members. Very lively un-tutored workgroups covering all mediums and styles are run continuously in the studio at M16.

Annual highlights are two major exhibitions: an open art competition in April in partnership with Icon Water and ACT Catchment Groups, a competition and exhibition for members in Spring at the Fitters Workshop in Kingston; and a week-long Summer School (Art Experience) each January with master teachers for about 100 participants.

Key events, workgroup vacancies, membership details and the ASOC newsletter can be found at the website.

Visitors are welcome to attend monthly Members Meetings.
