Founded in 1985, M16 Artspace is an inclusive organisation that supports a thriving arts community of emerging and established artists, writers and curators of any age, background or culture. We present high-quality exhibitions from both emerging and established artists and curators from Canberra, interstate and overseas. We are partially supported by the ACT Government for our gallery program.

Great crowds, successful openings

M16 Artspace welcomes applications from a broad constituency of cultural producers including artists, collectives, collaborators, writers and curators at all career levels. Proposals for exhibitions could include painting, sculpture, installation, sound, performance, film, and video works; supported by talks, reading groups, artist interviews, writing, classes, and panel discussions.

Our fees cover the hire of the space for 4 weeks, media release editing and distribution, social media, website and email promotion, curatorial assistance, lighting and currently an open bar with beer, wine and chilled water, thanks to our amazing sponsors BentSpoke Brewing Co and Quarry Hill Wines. M16 minds the gallery on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We also manage sales and take 30% commission. Exhibiting artists will be required to sit the gallery for one weekend during their exhibition if in Gallery 2 or 3, and two weekends if exhibiting in Gallery 1.

The Galleries

Gallery 1

With up to 62 linear metres of wall space and 189m2 of floor space, Gallery 1 is a well appointed space that enables the delivery of a substantial exhibition. While excellent for group shows, it also may be split into two separate exhibition areas.

Gallery 2

Recently renovated at the end of 2018, Gallery 2 is a space for projections as well as 2D and 3D work. The space is accessed through Gallery 1 and is 29sqm. All the walls are Gyprock on 16mm MDF, so a screw can be put in anywhere. Mounted to the roof is a projector with a media player and speakers that can project onto the far wall.

Gallery 3

21.8 linear meters of wall space and a floor to ceiling height of 2.7 m, Gallery 03 is ideal for artists wishing to exhibit 2 D or object based work.

Exhibition Proposals

Proposals are invited from curators and artists working in Canberra, interstate and internationally. While all proposals are considered, the program is by selection. Please join our mailing list to stay up to date on proposal rounds.

Basic terms and conditions are outlined below:

Production fees for 2024

Gallery 1 $2,840 for 4 weeks. ($710 per week)
Half of Gallery 1 $2,130 for 4 weeks ($532.5 per week)
Gallery 2 $890 for 4 weeks. ($222.5 per week)
Gallery 3 $630 for 4 weeks. ($157.5 per week)

• All figures include GST

• M16 provides sales support for all exhibitions. 30% sales commission (inc. GST) applies. Commission free gallery hire rates are available on request.

• Gallery hire is for 4 weeks and includes installation and demount time.
