Beyond the Verandah presents a selection of vivid watercolours created over the past ten years by Lynne Thomas. Thomas takes her inspiration from the tropical plants, many of which are introduced species that thrive in the coastal areas of Queensland which is where Thomas has lived and worked for 30 years.
The striking nocturnal flowers and flamboyant street trees and the weeds of the cane fields became the subject of her close observation. The pollinators often make an appearance in her compositions adding a sense of movement, while revealing an interconnectedness and communion between the species. The seasonal changes are subtle and Thomas has been able to communicate these variations as a watercolourist, by focusing on the plant’s life cycle to capture their ephemerality. Thomas’ work strives to illicit emotions rather than botanical correctness. Each study is a meditation on the beauty and wonder of the natural world that surrounds us when we take the time to look.
