Kerry Shepherdson, Returns chute, 2023.

Kerry Shepherdson

Chutespace

Sunday 25 November – Sunday 10 December

Opening Saturday 25 November 6-8pm

Kerry’s exhibition is a reference to the after-hours returns chute for borrowed library books, which inspired the creation of Chutespace mini gallery at M16 Artspace.

In this work Kerry considered the nostalgia of the municipal libraries in all the towns and communities across Australia. She recognizes the valued heritage that has been left behind as many closed down due to changing demographics and the digital age which has heralded electronic books, online information, and communication.

This building once housed the suburban Griffith Library and the returns chute was integral to it and community life when borrowing books for reading and pleasure, study and research by people of all ages was a more common activity.

Given this year 2023 is closing, it is an opportune moment for Kerry to pay homage with this work, to the establishment of Chutespace at M16 Artspace and a decade of mini exhibitions.
